Meet L.A.-based DJ and producer Devin Lucien. This guy has some seriously hot L.A. parties on his resumé, including Vanity Fair’s 2010 pre-Oscars bash, the “Wild Things” Halloween shin-dig at Blok, and, oh you know, a few casual gigs for Target, L’Oreal, Janet Jackson and Jeff Bridges. When he’s not DJing, he’s all about the mellow music of Miles Davis, The Black Keys, Caribou, and The XX. We pulled Devin aside for a quick chat while he was staying with us for the Winter Music Conference.
Freehand Miami: What are the best and worst things about being a DJ?
Devin Lucien: The best thing about DJing is being able to travel and getting paid for something that I love to do. Playing music has been a huge part of my life for 13+ years so I’d be happy doing it for free. The worst part of DJing is sometimes having to cater to the bottle-popping crowd. You gotta dumb it down when you don’t want to.
FH: Your site bio says you consulted on a Warner Bros. film. Which one?
DL: I consulted on Project X. I was there from the beginning of the process so it was cool to see it get finished and become the success that it was. I threw a lot of music ideas around and most ended up making it into the film, which was really great.
FH: What are you most excited to check out at the 2013 Winter Music Conference?
DL: The beach.
FH: Are you spinning at the WMC 2013 DJ Spin Off?
DL: Nope. I’m here to spin at Wall and Rec Room. And eat at Joe’s.
FH: What’s your favorite guilty pleasure song?
DL: Probably Maroon 5′s “Sunday Morning.” I don’t even know if that’s a guilty pleasure. It’s just a really good pop song.
FH: What are you Miami go-tos for dining, drinking and shopping?
FH: If you could hang out with anyone at The Broken Shaker, who would it be?
DL: Roy Alpert
